Malware & Viruses Are a Global Organised Crime

There has been a massive step change in the last few years with attacks on business through Malware and Viruses seeing massive increases in quantity. At the same time, there is also a trend towards more targeted attacks with a greater level of intelligence and detail.

When we think about viruses and malware, we often imagine a lone person looking to disrupt an organisation purely for the prestige and kudos of doing it. This isn’t the case anymore, companies are now being targeted with Ransomware by underground businesses looking to extort money.

Millions of pounds are paid by businesses around the world to unlock encrypted files and they are becoming more sophisticated. The nasty piece of Malware is hiding on machines waiting a few weeks before activation to make it more difficult to restore from a clean backup.

DDOS – Distributed Denial of Service attacks are also on the increase and just like Malware and Viruses have seen a significant step change in the last 18 months or so. It is now an underground business aimed at extorting money from businesses. You can buy a DDOS attack off the shelf now!

DDOS is increasing in size as well as link speeds are going up. 2.2GB is now the average which would kill any link up to that throughput while the attack is going on. Maximums have been seen up to 600GB which would be a serious challenge to most large service providers.

Most volumetric DDOS attacks are a two prong attack. The DDOS is used as a smokescreen for a more targeted application based within the DDOS. The second and more brutal attack are while the administrator is looking to resolve the DDOS.

On average most attacks last only 30 minutes. The aim is to cause the firewall or router to fall over and cover up the more dangerous wave.

Another step change is that by the end of 2016 more than 50% of Malware when it goes active will use SSL to encrypt its communications, thus bypassing or making it difficult for most monitoring and detection systems. There are various methods to stop this but essentially something needs to sit in the stream, decrypt and pass to a detector.

Organised crime is now using IT to extort millions of pounds from businesses around the world and they don’t need the technical expertise either.  A whole underground business world exists providing the expertise and know-how to achieve their goals.

More than ever before companies must take a holistic approach to security from a technical, procedural and staff educational standpoint if they are to stay as safe as possible.
