Will the Threat from Cybercrime Increase in 2018?

by | Jan 30, 2018 | News

The May launch of the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) signals a major step forward in mandating tighter and more auditable controls over data management. However, there are strong pockets of opinion that, in 2018, UK organisations will experience even more damaging incidents of data loss and business interruption by hackers.

According to one recent report, the UK’s cybersecurity experts predict that the triple threat of ransomware, phishing attacks and data loss are going to be more commonplace. Only 42% of cybersecurity executives questioned felt that they had done enough to protect their organisation’s network. Even they took a “qualified”, rather than an unequivocal, position.

So, can the new legislation – which forces greater awareness of the risks and solutions – turn the tide? It certainly puts protecting privacy more firmly on the agenda at UK organisations of all types and sizes.

Also, the UK government is flexing its muscles when it comes to combating cybercrime. The recently opened National Cyber Security Centre at GCHQ is part of a far-reaching cyber security strategy for 2018. There is to be further investment in cyber apprenticeships and a greater emphasis on teaching and training in appropriate skills.

Possibly equally relevant is the fact that organisations in the UK are already beginning to draw a line in the sand. This includes being more willing to share and collaborate to find solutions. For example, a Cyber Security Hub has been created by the Institution of Engineering and Technology to pool insights and skills in fighting hackers and viruses. Strength in numbers to combat these issues makes sense.

Another crucial way in which the UK is preparing to push the tide back is in the growing availability of technology that protects against cybercrime. As the software and protocols become more advanced – and better known – erecting barricades around valuable data becomes part of everyday business practice.

Perhaps this culture shift and growing understanding of the tools available is the most optimistic sign of all that 2018 doesn’t have to feature even more frequent cyber horror stories.
